Machine Crashes & New Pages
Nov. 26th, 2002 03:05 pmWell, yesterday was pretty exciting at work.
In the mid-afternoon our web server went down because our ISP came under a major DOS (denial of service) attack. Someone didn't like them or one of their clients and decided to try and take them off the net with no attention paid to who else they might be inconveniencing.
That type of attitude seems to be becoming increasingly common on the 'net, where people don't think about hurting actual people because they can't see them. I actually see that a small amount on LiveJournal in, e.g. the review communities, where some portion of reviewees respond with bile, hatred, and absolutely no understanding that there are people on the other side of the line. Fortunately interpersonal comments generally seem much more respectful and what you'd expect from another moral human being.
In any case, the attitude of flamers is the same as DOSers. Totally selfish and self-absorbed, cooped up in their little home offices lit only by the pale luminescence of their monitors.
After our ISP recovered from the DOS, we found out that our machine was still down. After trying to get our ISP staffers to diagnose the problem, my boss and I drove the hour down to our Palo Alto co-location facility, only to discover that the problem required a one-minute fix. Someone had banged into our cables during the chaos and knocked our machine's SCSI card out of its socket, crashing the machine and keeping it from rebooting.
So, about five hours of downtime for our customers thanks to two people: one DOSer and one careless person at our colo facility.
Annoying.
On the bright side I launched my new home page design for RPGnet to general acclaim and some nicely constructive criticism. I'm going to mod it some more on Friday, then push some of the changes through the site.
And now I've still got lots of mail sitting around, waiting answers, because the downtime and some required paperwork ate most of my work day yesterday. So back to that ...
