Office Complete
Jul. 15th, 2025 04:38 pmFinished up my first home improvement project in quite some time: flooring my closet.
I did the flooring of most of my office either 3 or 4 years ago. I got a FB "memory" of cleaning out my office to do the work several days ago. But the closet didn't get done at the time because I had bookshelves my dad and I had then recently built and they were quite full of books. And then Callisto got sick and Lucy got sick. And Kimberly had weird health problems that we've since diagnosed, so I lost most of my energy to do anything but the basics: work and keep the household running.
But last year I started to do some painting work around the house (which is another project to finish up) and this year I was ready to attack the closet.
The flooring work was actually pretty easy, though I needed to remember how to do it all! But I only had to put down 20 or so planks for the closet. The trickiest thing was that the space was small and tight enough that about half the planks had to be cut. (Placing planks can be quite quick ... until you get to one you have to cut).
But the hardest work was the finishing.
My dad came over and he cut and we routed some wood to make transitions between the closet and the office. That was the most time intensive part because (1) we had to build them just right to set the accordion doors in and (2) we don't have a planer to make it quick to get the transition to the right height, which meant endless [well, a couple of hours of] routing. We also had to cut trim.
Then I had to do lots of painting and staining and last week we finally put it together.
And just now I finally got everything back on the shelves.
Whew!
I have one more bit of flooring that I want to do this year: the tiny closet under our stairs. That should mostly expend my supply of flooring from four years ago that has been used throughout the downstairs.
I also would like to close out the blue highlights painting on the outside of the house that I started when we had our front stairs repaired. That involves me painting the railing on the lanai, figuring out the best way to paint all the ground-level stucco, and then hiring someone to replace our old falling apart gutters and paint the highlighted eaves in the process.
Then next year I hope to replace all the wood laminate upstairs with planking, because the wood laminate is peeling mess with big gaps between many of the boards. It was clearly not installed well.
Whew. Good to be able to get some of this work going again.
