In Which I End Roleplaying On My Birthday

So today I decided to end my Clockwork Campaign roleplaying campaign, and with it end the roleplaying that I've done with the group sometimes called the RuneQuest Mafia since 1989.
This has been a while coming. After I ended my Savage Tide campaign a few years back, about half the group opted not to continue on, because some have kids now, and because some have moved down to the South Bay and it's a long trek. So Donald, Mary, Kevin, Dave S., and I went on, and we are able to play through what I considered Act I of the Clockwork Campaign ... but then six months passed by without us ever getting to get what I considered my critical mass of four participants (me and three players). We did manage three participants a few times, once for a Microscope game and today for a board game, but I was tired of herding cats, and happy enough with the end of Act I as "a change in the world" and a conclusion to a major plot.
This isn't the end of the RuneQuest Mafia. There's better critical mass down south. So they'll continue on, even after I move.
(Kimberly notes that the things that keep us moored to the Bay Area are decreasing as our departure date for Hawaii approaches, and I have to agree.)
Oh, and this isn't necessarily the end of my getting together with a last few RQ Mafia friends either. We're talking about playing one of the various Legacy or campaign games, where we could get by with just three players, and where I don't have to prep adventures and then be frustrated by people's unavailability.
But still, for me at least, it's the end of an era.
I almost feel like it's the end of roleplaying for me, but that's really the unknown of life in Hawaii speaking.
I'd actually love to run a regular Microscope game there, where we kept working on the same history over a long period of time.
And I've been roleplaying since I got my Moldvay Basic Set in the early '80s, so I'll probably jump back in if something fun emerges after we move.
As I mentioned, we did have three for a board game day today. Kevin and Donald both gamely traveled all the way to Berkeley.
They also gamely played exactly what I wanted to play, Terraforming Mars, which is my favorite serious euro of recent euros. Donald creamed us. We let him play with the plants without any competition, and it cost us.
I also had fun foods that I enjoyed. For lunch there was a tasty Mediterranean Wrap that I got from Whole Foods, and for dinner Kimberly joined me at Cancun.
Then, in the evening, Kimberly and I watched Twice Upon a Time, the final episode of Doctor Who for Peter Capaldi, for Pearl Mackie, for Steven Moffat, for Mark Gatiss, and probably for others.
It was a fun, nostalgic episode. Seeing one and twelve bounce off of each other was terrific, and I enjoyed thirteen's one line. I really look forward to seeing Jodie Whittaker in that role, as I thought she was fabulous in Broadchurch.
Overall a nice, low-key birthday.
The only downside is that I've been feeling a little ill in the later evening. I thought for quite a while that it was indigestion from Cancun, but no, it's probably just the stupid kidney stone fragments.
I passed another teeny bit of gravel this evening, just a mote really, but there's probably more rattling around.
By my count, five fragments to date, the biggest about 2mm in diameter.

Date: 2018-03-25 04:44 pm (UTC)This wasn't an individual game wrapping up, but rather my participation roleplaying with the group and/or any roleplaying for the group in the East Bay area. We've had any number of games over the years, the longest few of which topped out at 4 years or so.
And, yeah, I'm not particularly melancholy. It's been a long time coming, and was going to be a requirement when I moved.
