There's been a big upsurge in travel these last years, between Rebooting the Web of Trust and the yearly Blockstream offsites. So this weekend, I've been preparing for the latest RWOT, which is in Santa Barbara.

I opted for train. I figured it might be my last chance to see that much of the California landscape, so I'm taking a train down in the morning, then a train home on Friday. I probably would have preferred just one of the two, but couldn't really make that work. It was silly expensive flying to Santa Barbara.

This weekend was work, work, work. There were little bits of prep, including some last supplies at Trader Joe's and CVS. I also prepped three histories for writing on the train. (I would have liked to prep more, but there just wasn't time; if I run out of writing, probably on the way back, we'll see how good the wifi is, I guess.)

I also wanted to do my best to get the house in good shape for K., who is still broken-footed. So there were dishes and a little bit of laundry. There were changing sheets and stacking up plates for kittie wet food somewhere they were more accessible. There was sweeping bathrooms and stairs. I also got a new shower head installed, to make it easier for her to shower, something that had intimidated me a few nights earlier when I saw how many parts it had.

I also did a real thorough clean-up of our dining room. The immediate purpose was to make it easy for her to have a party-game night while I'm out, but I'm pleased how much general cleaning and organization I did, and how much nicer it looks, because it'll also make gaming nicer for my regular Thursday night group.

Exercise and activity seems to get my kidney stone moving. I've been pretty low key since the 21st, the night I had that 12-hour attack which left me in pain and unable to sleep and was generally pretty horrible. So my pain had been pretty minimal since, and never set off by anything specific. But the activity I did in cleaning up the dining room, which was an hour or two of bustling back and forth and up and down the stairs, left me hurting by the end of it. I was also hurting again this morning.

The good thing is that the pain never really got past the discomfort level. And even that mostly disappeared when I took my 800mg Ibuprofen.

So, that leaves me hopeful for the trip: that I could get the kidney stone moving again but not end up in horrible pain again. Fingers crossed.

Leaving on a jet train ...

(Except it's not a jet train. If the California high-speed rail ever does actually come through, it'll be long after we've abandoned the state.)
