I have more than once bemoaned the lack of bicycle locks at the Smart & Final in Oakland where I pick up Torani syrups for our SodaStream. Then one of the bicycling mailing lists I'm on noted that you can fill out a form to request bike racks in Oakland. So, I did. No idea if there will be any response within any reasonable amount of time, but it was very cool that they had the option.

Then, this afternoon, I took Broadway in to Endgame, all the way from College to 10th (a route I rarely take, except when I stop by the Rockridge Library, as I did today). As always when I take that route, I bemoaned how terrible the road surface is from 51st to 38th. I even noted which streets marked the boundaries of the very bad, to see if I could submit any request regarding that.

'Lo and behold, I got home and discovered that Oakland is not only repaving that exact area, but also adding bike lanes! Woo hoo! Or, rather they're sending out notices to businesses saying they're planning this, who likely will freak out at the idea of any change, as the NIMBYs on Telegraph did when they killed the idea of rapid mass transit running up and down Telegraph.

So, EBBC is asking people to show their support for the project--which I happily did via email, telling them how I'd been hating that very road this very day.

Overall: Oakland totally rocking on bicycling things.

Fucking Republicans in the House, not so much, as they're trying to kill all funding for pedestrian and bicycle improvements to roads this very minute, because they're enormous douche bags.

The first newspaper I found on the topic was from Wisconsin:

As its written, the bill eliminates the $1.2 billion directed to states for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to Schools. In Wisconsin, it would cut more than $6.2 million allocated annually for non-motorized transportation enhancements and $3.2 million for Safe Routes to Schools.

Because Republicans think your children should die on the way to school.

Which should be the Democrats' slogan from here on out.

(See that Wisconsin article, among others.)
