A Lazy Weekend
Oct. 11th, 2011 09:14 pmActually, I lie, we did have one other thing planned for the weekend. My sister, Melody, recently got the keys to the familial house in San Jose. She'd moved out to an apartment when she started college, and then when my parents moved to Hawaii, she didn't want to move back to the house, so it got rented. A few years later, Melody is no longer as excited by apartment living and she's no longer working on the other side of the south bay, so the familial house (which lost its renters last month) was looking really good. My dad came out from Hawaii to help get her settled and the house back into shape post-renters. That unfortunately meant a huge amount of yard work, as the house is on a very large lot and the renters pretty much hadn't taken care of it.
So, (during a break from yard work) my dad, Melody and Jared came up on Sunday. We talked a bit, had dinner at La Med, then talked a bit. Poor Jared was very, very tired the whole time, as his animation program is clearly requiring long hours. But we all had a good chat. And it was largely relaxing, which is why I wasn't thinking of it as planned time.
Beyond that, I read a lot over the weekend. (Currently: a reread of Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds, as I want to read the sequels; a reread of the Grant Morrison and the Joss Whedon X-Men, as I want to read the brand-new Breaking Point which revisits a core plot from Whedon's run; and a read of Falls the Shadow as it's the next Doctor Who New Adventures.) Also slept long hours at night (9 hours two days running!) and napped in the afternoon over the long weekend. Ate out a few times. And had a nice bike ride in the light, not-too-cold drizzle on Monday. Just downtown, then through campus, and back home. I love the light, not cold rain. I would have biked further if I hadn't had a book in my backpack that I was afraid might get wet.
Unfortunately all the weeds I pulled out front are coming back quicker than expected. Grrr. Stupid rain. I'll have to pull the little seedlings as soon as they have enough mass to pull, then it's going to be mulch or Preen for sure!
We had helicopters circling the city much of the day. I can't figure out why. Which is almost as annoying as the helicopters.
