Yes, There was Swimming
Jan. 26th, 2011 12:45 amWent to a new beach today, down a very long and bumpy dirt road east of Poipu. Mary and my dad had talked about it many times, but I'd never gotten out there before.
It was a nice beach, with a considerable stretch of underwater sand, making it really easy to get in and out, yet there were still large rock shelves here and there which allowed for some fish watching. The beach was really quite empty, perhaps no surprise given the very long dirt road we went down to get it. There were at various times 0-3 other people in the water, which was a bit eerie. But I kept my eye on the shores and rocks and knew where I was at all times. I enjoyed getting to swim around a new beach, but may now well be swimmed out for the whole trip. It wasn't quite as fun with no one to swim with the whole time (since my dad's been sick, and Kimberly announced her intention not to swim prior to the trip, following a bad experience two years ago).
We went out for dinner, the first time we have this trip, though Mary has brought home food a few times. This was at Keoki's a pretty, touristy-kitsch eatery full of Hawaiian foliage and tiki torches (that Kimberly & I both think fondly of, because we went there a couple of times on our first trip to the island). They'd pulled most of their chicken off the menu, sadly, but I had some delicious fish tacos. I agreed with my dad that it was a shame that they now bread and fry the fish, but it was still very tasty, as was the guacamole, salsa fresca, black beans, and everything else that went into the tacos.
Another episode of Star Trek tonight. The Naked Time. "Ah, this is the one with Sulu fencing", I said. Later my dad asked if Kimberly and I watched a lot of original Star Trek, and I said that I hadn't seen any in 20 years, probably. I guess they just made an impression on me. In any case, season 1 of ST:TOS seems to have been a great gift for my dad, at least in his sickness, as he's already watched 4 eps, and only 2 of them with me.
A bit more reading before bed ...
