In Hawaii

Just read that Oakland is planning to add 32 miles of bike markings on their roads this year, including the Shaftner-Webster corridor that I regularly ride to Endgame. That makes me very happy, because better marked biking (and sometimes the addition of bike lanes) makes things much safer. Yay for having funds to do so even in this economic climate.

That's right, even in Hawaii on vacation, the internet is totally available now. But that's been largely the case since we started visiting my parents, who live here now.

Today was our travel day, and it's gotten to be pretty routine for me. I'm happy to say that I no longer hate and dread the flights for a variety of reasons (including having figured out foods that make me sick and hoarding books to read on the plane which I'm really looking forward to). We got up at the much earlier than usual time of 5.15am this morning and were at the Oakland Airport by about 7.00am, but beyond that everything was pretty routine.

I've gotten better and better at ignoring the airplane and just doing things while we spend 5 hours or so in the sky. This time I had a laptop with me, originally because I had my next iPhone game, Michael Schacht's Gold! out for review, and I wanted to be able to fix it if Apple bounced it for any reason. But I got the OK for that last night. (It'll go on sale on Feb. 3, the same day the tabletop game does.) By that time, though, I was already planning to also use it to do some planeside editing on my history book.

Which is what I did, and man the time flew by. I think I got only about half of R. Talsorian done in about 3 hours, then my battery ran out, but that's 3 hours ahead on the book. I may finish R. Tal while here in Hawaii, or I may just totally chill. Not too concerned either way.

Very happy to be here, and out of the cold and chill of the Bay Area. It was shaping up the last week, but we got here and it was a balmy 80 with trade winds keeping it feeling relatively cool.

Hoping to swim tomorrow, but that may or may not be the case. My dad is having a kidney stone issue right now, which may keep some plans more low-key while we're here, but we'll still get plenty of R&R, and getting out of the home/work environment to somewhere we can totally relax is one of the boons of this yearly trip.
