Californians: Stop Telemarketing Now
Apr. 4th, 2003 04:21 pmIf you're living in California, you can now pre-register for the national telemarketer do-not-call list:

Corporate America tried their damnedest to kill this initiative. They tried to attach fees to being on the do-not-call list, to discourage most consumers from being on it. But the Federal Trade Commission was able to push it through without any of this foolishness. And the telemarketers are paying the cost of maintaining this list.
There are a couple of loopholes, for non-profits, politicians, and "pre-existing relationships" (e.g., your credit card), but 90% is better than nothing.
For the rest of the country: you should be able to sign up when the registry actually goes live, toward this summer. But, in the meantime, you might want to ask your state DoJ if there's a way to pre-register like California is allowing.
Every once in a while the average citizen manages to beat out the corporations just a bit.
