Well, it was quite a busy weekend.

On Friday, as I wrote previously, I headed down to San Jose for an evening at GDC, got lost in the San Jose Convention Center, and made it back here a tad after midnight.

On Saturday I had gamers over, as I almost always do. This time we started off the session by cutting down the pine tree at our front door that K. has been angsting about for years.

The sad thing is that we had to do it without a single good tool. We had a hack saw, which might have done the job if the tree was still a sapling. And a real saw, which was dull and had small teeth. And a shovel, which was actually a SAS survival shovel or somesuch, and thus had one sharp edge which we used to hack at the tree for approximately a minute.

And finally (the piece de resistance) a bronze axe which had been sandcasted by hand by one of the gamers. Of all the tools, it actually had a sharp edge on it (talk about priorities), and was about as useful as the real, though dull saw. We took turns sawing through the tree and opening up the cut with the axe, until we finally got impatient, attached a rope to the tree, and pulled on it till we broke it in half.

Ah yes, we are lumberjacks.

As a free bonus I also destroyed the shrubbery in the backyard which K. had also been fretting about.

And then, because gamers had secretly snuck over steak & salmon for BBQ in our backyard, I broke down five grocery bags worth of cardboard which had recently been cleared out of our sun room and were blocking the back door.

I think there was some gaming involved too.

Sunday, at least, was more relaxing. I read some more of Lies Across America, an interesting look at historic sites across the US, and what they lie about and what they purposefully omit (Hint: it's mostly lies about what we did to the American Indians, about slavery, and about the true purposes of the Confederate States of America).

I also started on the same author's other book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, which covers similar themes of untold US history, but does it from the viewpoint of what's in high school textbooks, and which I've found much more interesting because it's more in-depth and more cohesive.

And finally I read a little bit more of Revelation Space, a SF/space-opera book which I'm enjoying but which isn't yet a can't-put-down-book.

I'll probably write more about all of those when I finish them up.

I took a 4 or 5 hour nap in the middle of the day too, which I think says how low my energy reserves were after last week.

And now it's Monday and I've already started back to work. I just finished up my list of everything I want to do during my work week and it's quite a lot ...
