Alas, my Hawaii vacation is over. In exactly 12 hours my airplane should be taking off from Lahui. Within 24 hours, I should be snuggled in my own bed, surrounded by vaguely unsettled cats.

Actually, I don't generally resent the end of a travel vacation. Though I enjoy my time away, I also enjoy my return to familiar things. If I'm at home, I could stay away from work forever, reading and relaxing, but when I'm away, the return home is a reward in itself.

What I do hate about the end of a travel vacation is the trip back. I'm never fond of the trip back to the airport, but when I get to the airport, things slip out of my control, and I'm resigned to the trip from there. However, I also get stir crazy after a few hours on a plane.

(Fortunately on my trip over I learned that some of the free games I downloaded for the iPhone are genuinely fun, though my battery no longer charges enough to last for the entire extent of the trip ... but I also have books, comics, and RPGs to keep me occupied.)

Anyway, today was the last day of vacation. We only had one real event scheduled, which was of course the last trip to the beach. I'd decided I was tired of snorkeling, so upon hearing that my dad had some boogie boards, I took one out to Brenecke's Beach.

That was one of the most exhausting 45 or so minutes of my life. Brenecke's Beach has lots of waves, and they buffeted me, tossed me, turned me, threatened to smash me against rocks, and otherwise had their way with me.

By the time I was done, I was learning better about how to get out through the waves, sometimes pushing through them, sometimes floating over them, and sometimes lifting my board up above them.

Out in the waves, I managed to get going a couple of times, but never actually caught a crest. I think I'd have to work more to really figure out the sport, and the time just wasn't long enough.

I'm quite sore now, particularly my shoulders, which the waves tried to dislocate again and again as they attempted to pull the board out of my hand.

Despite my description, it was fun.

Talk, so-so Chinese Dinner (at Number One), and The Muppets Take Manhattan made up the evening, and now I just need to go read for a bit to rest my head enough to get to sleep.

Tomorrow I hope to rise with the sun, as I have every other day this week, to have a few final hours before I head out to the airport.
