Had true day #1 of our Hawaiian vacation today.

This time around, it feels much more like we're actually living in Hawaii, and that makes sense because the folks are living in Hawaii now. But, we spent the first part of the day doing the sort of thing that we'd do in our own town. We went out to a Wal*Mart to pick up some things (mind you, the things were sunscreen, flip-flops and water shoes), and then we went to CostCo to pick up some food items.

This afternoon we got more into the normal vacationing spirit, picking up snorkeling gear at Snorkel Bob's, then going out to swim and snorkel at Poipu Beach. As usual, the water in Hawaii was wonderful, though the fish were relatively scant. I think the fish-watching at Poipu hasn't been as good since the sandbar washed out several years.

Also spent plenty of time hanging out with the folks today, particularly my dad, which is very nice. When he moved out here he said that we might end up seeing each other more, because though we're only likely to visit every year or two, we'll probably stay with them for a week or so when we do, and spend a lot of time with them, and that's entirely true.

(When we were chatting tonight Mary mentioned that if we ever wanted to come out here and stay for a month or two we'd be very welcome, and that'd certainly be very cool if the time arose at some point, but the cats would not permit it.)

We also watched the season premiere of Lost tonight: very funny seeing very Hawaiian landscapes while in Hawaii. Kimberly & I would have been perfectly happy to watch it when we got home, but my dad needed to see it so that he could talk to Melody about it, so we were just as pleased to see it tonight (and now I can go talk about it at Xenagia.).

Overall, a very pleasant and relaxing day. When I lay down tonight, I expect that I'll be able to close my eyes and feel the waves of Poipu pushing me up and down again, which is a very relaxing way to drift off to sleep.

Kimberly heard from Jay today, who says the cats are bored by our absence. We'll see if they keep up that air of non-chalence when we've been gone a bit longer.
