Berkeley Stuff

When I talked about the Giant Tuning Fork in downtown Berkeley, I mentioned that it was the first of a pair of public art pieces. Well, the second one is now up, just a block north of the tuning fork, in the middle of Shattuck Square. As far as I can tell, it's a giant, phallic dog turd. I've been meaning to take a picture of it; perhaps I'll think to bring a camera next time I go to the gym, which is just a couple of blocks away.
Late last year we had a new store open in Berkeley called "Elephant Pharmacy". It's the newest brainstorm of the same guy who created reel.com. He hopes to turn it into a whole chain of healthy/organic/natural drug stores, kind of the equivalent of Whole Foods. There's an article about it in today's SFGate talking about the founder's rather manic personality. (And will it work? Hard to say. When "Smart Alec's" was founded at Telegraph & Durant, it was going to become a chain of organic/health/natural fast food restaurants, and since it's not only added meat it its menu, but also hasn't opened up any other stores as far as I know.)
Still no movement apparent on the revival of the Berkeley Daily Planet. Original reports had said it might be back by the end of January, but thus far I've been stuck with picking up the subpar Daily Cal whenever I make it downtown. But, if I ever want to know about the latest ASUC scandal ... I'm there. (And the latest ASUC scandal is apparently that they're taking fees from the graduate students and then spending them on undergraduate organizations. Exciting.)
