I've been looking at a lot of maps of the area lately, and in the process I noticed that there's a large green area right above our house. It's the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve, and it's just a mile due east of us, up in the hills. Kimberly and I decided to walk up there today.

The park itself is a watershed. It's filled with eucalyptus trees in the lower lands and native Californian vegetation as you climb the hills. There's a fire trail through the preserve, with the rest of the lands being most wild (with the exception of some smaller, unmarked trails). The fire trail goes up about 700 feet over three-quarters of a mile, so it gives you a lot of height very quickly (and tiringly).

Most of the way up the trail, Kimberly and I found a beautiful panoramic view of the East Bay.

I particularly enjoyed it because I could see every where I'd biked lately along the Bay Trail, from Alameda in the south to Richmond in the north. This picture shows a much more limited view, with the Emeryville Marina being prominent to the left and Cesar Chavez Park (and the Berkeley Marina) prominent to the right.

Unfortunately the very steep and rocky trail got to be too much for Kimberly and so she turned back at what turned out to be about a hundred feet from the top of the trail. There were some trails up there at the ridge line that went through UC land, and I was tempted to take some of them, but I got turned around, and eventually headed back down to the city; I can explore those UC Trails, which my map has labeled as the Upper (Jordan) Trail and the East-West Trail another day.

There were some unmarked paths running along the north side of the Preserve that took me down to the corner of Dwight Way and Sports Lane (at the edge of the Clark Kerr campus) and from there it was an easy walk along streets back home.
