I hate staying entirely home on Halloween, so this evening I suggested to the wife that we go get pie at Nation's. This allowed us to walk across all of downtown Berkeley and gawk at the costumes on the way.

(Well, I gawked at least.)

I was surprised how low rent the costumes were this year. Almost everything looked like the costumers had just gone to their closet and put something on. There were some girls dressed as joggers, a guy who was dressed in short shorts, presumably attempting to look gay, and lots of other people just in odd shirts and pants. There were a few costume hats and an eyepatch, but almost nothing that looked like a purchased costume.

(The exception was a French Maid outfit; the girl had one of her hands constantly on her skirt, trying to tug it down.)

Is this just how the college culture of Berkeley has gone lately, or is instead a sign of an economy that George Bush has jammed down the toilet?

I'm glad to say that this year, the first I've taken my daughter trick-or-treating, was pretty good for costumes. We walked around an suburban estate and met many witches, ghosts and a couple of axe murderers. Quality varied, but there were some really impressive efforts including a pair of corpse brides who looked freshly dug up.

My daughter Rowan dressed in a devil costume, which she insisted was a 'fire fairy'. I agree: she was too cute to be a devil.
