Yesterday a game publisher contacted me and asked me if I'd review a couple of their card games for RPGnet. He told me that he'd liked the ones I'd written before, and appreciated the fact that I hit good and bad points both, in a constructive manner.
Now, personally, I think that writing the game reviews I do is a bit silly. It's not "real" writing, but I've been pursuing it because (1) it's been giving me a venue to think about strategic game design on a game-by-game basis, and (2) it's allowed me to do a bit to better RPGnet.
Nonetheless, even for something I consider "silly", it's really nice to get positive recognition. And, with tight finances, it's nice to get some free games too.
