Berkeley: The Return of the Daily Planet?
Jan. 10th, 2003 11:26 amOver the last week, newspaper dispensers across Berkeley for the Daily Planet have been filled with broadsheets reading: "Watch this space. We will be back." I did a triple take the first time I saw one, because I'd muchly lamented the city newspaper's demise late last year.
This week's East Bay Express expands on what's going on. Becky O'Malley, a long-time South Berkeley resident and software designer, is taking over the paper and hopes to resume printing as early as this month on a 2 or 3 times a week basis.
O'Malley apparently has some changes in mind, including less AP and more editorial. Since editorial about the city and the nation was always a real strength of the paper, I'm looking forward to it, provided that they maintain their strong focus on city news too.
The East Bay Express is incredibly snide about another local liberal paper coming back, which tells me they're not too happy about the competition.
