Another busy-ish weekend day.

Biking. Kimberly & I headed out of the house at about 10am to ride down to the Berkeley marina, then up along the Bay Trail (and the annoying non-Bay Trail at Golden Gate Fields) to Point Isabel. It was a beautiful ride with relatively clear air allowing us to see San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Mount Tam. Also, nicely breezy, keeping the warmth away.

At the dog park we saw many cute dogs, including two three-legged dogs (both hopping about at the same time), some very teeny dogs, an Irish Wolfhound, a Great Dane, two dogs who love people on benches, and many more. The funniest dog was the one who kept plunging his entire head into a water bucket when he wanted a drink. He had a drinking problem. We talked to some dogs, talked for some dogs, and talked to some owners.

After that we went grocery shopping at Target, which was really the point of the ride, but since Point Isabel is just a couple of miles past, it seemed like a good detour on a day that we didn't have much else planned for. Anyway, we did lots of good stocking-up at Target, then chugged up the hill and back home.

Total ride was about 13.5 miles. Not a huge lot, but enough to make up for not going to Endgame yesterday.

Resting. It's been hot the last couple of days (and lasting through the next few, apparently). So after we got home, had lunch, and watched the first episode of the latter half of Glee season one (yay!), K. and I each went our own ways to crash. She napped downstairs on the couch and I napped upstairs on the bed, in between two open windows with the air flowing through them. Oh, there was a bit of reading too, but mostly napping.

Sanding. At about 5pm I figured it was cooled done enough for me to finish the sanding of the dining room window sill. I spent another 1.5 hours on it or so, with much less power sanding and much more careful work with scraper and sanding sponge. Afterward I cleaned it all as best I could with soapy water. Overall, I'm very pleased with the results. As I said before, the wood isn't in great shape, but it looks pretty good now that all the cracking and peeling paint is off of it.

Well, most of the cracking, peeling paint; I had trouble getting it all off of the bottom, partially because of the angle and partially because the paint wasn't as screwed up there; so I did as much as I could, and figure the rest should be a good foundation. If not, I'll just have to do the bottom again.

So at this point the plan is to fill and recaulk (under the window where I was able to get old caulk out) tomorrow, then to prime it if I have time. That'll leave a coat of paint to Tuesday, finishing things off, unless another coat is needed. I have my fingers crossed this will work well, but I'm currently optimistic given how well the wood cleaned off after almost 4 hours of work.

Well, first of all I don't think I'd quite appreciated the scope of the amount of filling I needed to do. There was a lot of it. Second, I didn't realize quite how tricky it was to fill bigger holes and cracks. The wood filler likes to stick, which means if there's enough it sticks to itself. I did get better at figuring out how to manage it as I worked today. But I was still at it for another hour and a half.

The end result is that everything got filled and then sanded back down afterward. I was a bit worried with how things looked when there was just wood filler splattered all over, but once it was sanded back down it looked good.

However, some of the places never got filled right. So, tomorrow I need to make sure my surface is clean from the latest sanding and then take a second shot at filling, which will require more sanding at the end of the day.

Which probably means it'll be Wednesday before I do any priming. Ah well.
