Arkham Investigations
Dec. 14th, 2008 01:40 amThis afternoon, as part of our Saturday Gaming (since neither Donald or I were up to preparing something for the day), we played board games, but with a twist. Kevin brought Arkham Horror with a special Arkham Investigations scenario.
These are pre-scripted plots that allow you to play Arkham Horror with special plot locations popping up and sending you off to paragraph-based plots (which break over game turns).
It's a very interesting idea. The paragraphs made great use of the Arkham stats, showing how close the game is to an RPG. I liked all of that quite a bit.
On the downside, it felt somewhat disconnected from the game; rather than using clue tokens or other game parts to advance the plot, it instead created special plot locations and then took you off the board to mark your status. I would have preferred something better integrated.
(And, perhaps, the less said about the writing of the paragraphs the better; let's just say, more purple than Lovecraft for the one we played--and sadly a bit too railroaded too.)
I'd love to pontificate about it and its possibilities more on BoardGameNews, but I've got the next couple of months of articles lined up, so this will have to do for the nonce.
