EndGame Amusements
Sep. 15th, 2005 01:17 pmWent to EndGame last night and played a good set of three games: Clans, In the Shadow of the Emperor, and Go West!. Oddly enough, my third play of each game for the year.
Shadow & Go West were both Eric V's copies of the games, but I ended up teaching the rules for all three. Eric hates teaching rules, so I think that just about made his night, getting to play three games that he'd wanted to (he was less enthusiastic about Go West after the play) and not having to teach any of them. In any case, I'd played both of the latter games more than anyone else, so I felt pretty ready to teach them, even without prep.
Ugh! that In the Shadow of the Emperor teach is long, however.
What amused me more, however, was Eric's reaction when I was teaching Shadow. I got to the action phase and I started going through all the cards:
"This one, uh, costs 2 Thalers and gives you a victory point. This one costs 1 Thaler and lets you move a noble from one space to another ..."
As I went through them Eric said with some amazement, "You can read German icons??"
They're apparently like a foreign language to him, something that amused me greatly throughout the rest of the game, as I said things like, "Well of course the Church Influence only gives one vote to a married couple, as you can clearly see from the one finger pointing upward."
Heh.
And the results:

And the results:
- A pitiful last place in Clans due to an immensely stupid last turn move (though I'm not sure any move could have won it for me)
- A solid first-place in Shadow by 5 victory points (24-20-19-19). As I said, "And you note I won by 4 points, and I took the 1 VP action 4 times." Eric, who came in second with 20, took it the other time.
- A narrow one point loss in Go West thanks to another player hoarding his double-turn piece until the very end, but overall a very unsatisfying game because almost everyone refused to score the whole game. The final scores were in the 10s and 20s.
