Just finished watching the first DVD of Enterprise (that's the pilot and the next two eps of season one) and I was surprised. I liked it. Maybe this was helped by low expectations, by people constantly saying, "Season X was bad, but in season Y the show picks up" (where X has been 1, 2, and 3 at various times; and Y has in turn been 2, 3, and 4, as odd as that sounds). But I enjoyed watching all 4 hours, particularly the pilot which was nicely cinematic.

I can really get behind the vision of Enterprise. In a way unlike the other Star Trek shows, it feels like it's about us. The future isn't dark and gritty (ala DS9, which I liked), nor is it white-washed, all straight edges and impossible future science fictions (ala the rest). Instead it's our future, the universe outside our door if space travel were possible 150 years from now. They're eating real looking food, and they're real people, not purely science fictional archetypes. Heck, the captain even has a dog on board, which humanizes both him and the show.

I also really enjoy the fact that the show is about the wonder of exploration and discovery. I was shocked when the credits came up with pop music behind it, and I was enthralled when I heard the words speaking a message of perseverance into the future, and when we saw shots of the moon landing, the Mars Rover, and the Apollo astronauts. In the (otherwise fairly mediocre) episode four, I loved a bit at the start where the captain and a few of the other crew members (and the dog!) roam the Strange New Planet they've found, just revelling in the discovery of this earthlike place.

The show is funny and delightful. It's no Babylon 5, mind you. I don't think it's deep. But I really enjoy the vision, and I think it may be a better embodiment of what Rodenberry tried to do with the original Star Trek, painting an optimistic vision of our future, than any other entry in the Star Trek franchise.

Mind you, I've just seen the first 4 hours of the show.
