shannon_a: (games)
I went back to End Game today for evening gaming. No need to forward to the exciting twist at the end of this story: I got to stay the whole evening this time, with no locked-out-of-the-house phone calls. I'm not necessarily planning to go to End Game every week, but there's no gaming planned for this Saturday, so I wanted to make sure I got in my quota for the week.

This week I got to play 4 games (woohoo!) from a bit before 7pm to a couple minutes after 10pm. There were only a dozen or so people by the time I left. Better, I got to play 3 games I really wanted to!

Colossal Arena was up first. I'd brought my copy to play too, but Patrick (who was here gaming a couple of weeks ago) had just bought one, so we played his. It was the slowest game of Colossal Arena I'd ever played. Ugh. I'll grant, no one else had played before, but, really, it's a light filler game. I couldn't believe it took over an hour to play. We played with all 4 of the new monsters, and they were amusing enough, though I now see one of them, which lets you place a bet in a previous row, is totally useless for 5-player play.

Marco Polo Expedition was up next. I'd heard bad things about it over on BGG, but it was really quite a fine game of set collection and clever tactics. I've just popped over to BGG to add it to my I-want list.

Then I played ZooSim with three other players. It's a fine game, though I've never played it 4-player before. I got utterly creamed, no doubt because I was using my well-learned 2-player strategy.

Last was Ra which I've been wanting to play for ages. Dave G. brought his copy, and I asked to play, and was quite pleased by the results. This was already on my I-want list. I hope uberPlay doesn't mess up the theme when they reprint.

Other games I saw being played: Puerto Rico (in preparation for a tournament on Saturday), Betrayal at House on the Hill (x2; an unfortunately noisy game), Mu, Bang!, The Settlers of Catan (x2; at least one with Cities & Knights; one of the players was a grandmotherly lady who much to my surprise seemed to be one of the most knowledgeable about the game), Carcassonne, and Zertz. There were at least a couple of others, but that's as much as registered to me.

Next time I need to remember to stick at least one or two 2-player games in my bag unless I get caught out without a game (though none of the games in my bag got brought out today. I'd brought Colossal Arena, Mammoth Hunters, and Fifth Avenue).
