seidl tagged me with the why I'm a geek meme. The idea? List 5 reasons that I'm a big nerd.
1. 24 bookshelves in our house. Full of paperbacks, hardcovers, fiction, non-fiction, trade paperbacks, and games. There are two somewhat non-geeky shelves, one of which contains VCR tapes, in our newly revamped Guest Room (but which contained paperbacks until a few weeks ago, said paperbacks now being scattered about our Sun Room), and one of which mostly contains cooking stuff (and is thus in the kitchen). Still, even discounting them, 22 shelves would be pretty geeky.
2. 3,680 hits when I google for "Shannon Appel", another 8,210 when I google for "Shannon Appelcline" and another 1,550+ when I google the old USEnet archives under various names and email addresses. The web hits span a multitude of interests over the last 15 years including writing I did for various Chaosium games (usually as part of the Chaosium Digest), RuneQuest and Ars Magica resources, gaming magazine indices, some Sun Microsystems docs I wrote, an SSL FAQ that I used to manage, any number of Skotos press releases, and various published works that I've written. The oldest Usenet posting that I can find archived seems to be a diatrabe about how not to close down a MUD from 1990. That's geeky.
3. Up to 3 game nights a week, if I'm up to it. EndGame & general socialization on Wednesday, a review game group on Thursdays, and regular roleplaying on Saturdays, with a group that I've roleplayed with for 16 years.
4. I'm a computer scientist and I work for an online game company. Hello!!?? Surprisingly, this is a relatively ungeeky area because I only have three dozen or so computer science, programming, and game design books on my shelves. Of course there are people who don't own three dozen books period, so ...
5. I bite the heads off of chickens, and eat live bugs.
