Vignette: Two Bus Drivers
Dec. 11th, 2002 11:42 amThe Scene: Oxford Avenue running along the western side of the University of California, at Berkeley.
I've just passed the main entrance to the University and am now walking by one of the Bear Transit Perimeter buses, free mass transit instituted a couple of years ago by the University to pump pollutants into the air for the sake of athletic, young college students too lazy to haul their asses across Berkeley's fairly small and compact campus.
Bus Driver #1 is wandering slowly across Oxford, headed to The Land of Milk and Honey, a/k/a The Bear Transit Bus Driver Rest Stop. Bus Driver #2 is preparing to board the bus. Before he does, he stops and turns to shout across the busy street at Bus Driver #1.
Bus Driver #2 (on the threshold of the bus): The pedal on the right's the brake?
Bus Driver #1 (halfway across Oxford): No, that's the gas.
Bus Driver #2 shrugs and boards the bus. Bus Driver #1 nonchalantly continues her darting trek across the avenue.
I nonchalantly continue onward too, though afterward I keep one eye peeled until the bus has actually passed me by.
On board, I can only imagine, the students huddle together in fear, wondering if, perhaps, they might be able to save more than just their slowly atrophying muscles by walking to their next classes.
