We had our TiVo record Rescue Me again tonight. I told it to tape 30 minutes extra this time, and it's a good thing, because the episode ran over the hour by a couple of minutes again (though less than last time where it ran over by at least 5 minutes). I don't know what FX is doing.

I stopped enjoying the series a few episodes ago, when it was obvious that its spinning downturn wasn't going to end. I was hoping to get some closure by watching this last episode of the season, and really didn't get anything other than the recurring message of the series, which is that life sucks.

(spoilers)

During its first couple of episodes, Rescue Me was my absolute favorite show on TV, the thing I looked forward to watching the most every week. But then, fairly rapidly it took a huge downturn in quality, to the point where the plotting was uneven, the dialogue was occasionally bad, and the whole mess was totally unbelievable by the end of the first season. I have to wonder if there was some production change after either the pilot or the first couple of episodes, if the same crew decided to take it in a different direction, or if I just saw something that wasn't there.

My first problem was that the show got totally soap-operaish. Bad, melodramatic things happened to everyone just about every episode. Mothers dying, dogs dying, fathers having strokes, wives developing alzheimers, daughters getting into major accidents, affairs, more affairs, ex-girlfriends dying, families taking off, some fireman dying, another fireman critically wounded. Gah. You could pretty much guarantee a new, life-changing event every week, to the point where you stopped caring.

My second problem was that the show got totally sitcomish. The monkey flinging his own poo and then being killed by a drug over-doze, that was probably the first sign. But there was also the pooping dog, and everyone moving into Tommy's house, including a funnnnny midget, and the firemen pooping in the girl's bathroom, and everyone trying out weird sexual techniques, and measuring penis sizes, and firemen having to cut off cock rings. It wasn't just stupid, unbelievable sitcom plots, but 3rd grade humor that would have been rejected from Shrek too.

Bleh.

The show started off seeming a contemplative and personal drama and it just tanked, bad.

After watching the final episode, I reluctantly deleted my season pass so that I won't pick it up next year and accidently watch the next season. It's a pity, because I liked the characters and I liked the actors too.
