Had a bit of kitty-cat trauma today.

First, the background. [livejournal.com profile] kimberly_a liked our current house for many reasons, but one of them was definitely that it had a fireplace. However, when inspections were done, we were told that the top of the chimney had never been built right, and it would be best to fix it. This cost money--not a lot, but enough, especially since Kimberly was still in school at the time, and we were running up debt month by month.

And so the fireplace sat, unused.

Fast forward a couple of years. When I ran taxes this year I found out that I'd overestimated how much we had to pay, "thanks" to some reductions in my own wages and general (though minor for the non-rich) tax cuts. So, we had a bit less than a thousand dollars to put to something big. I suggested the fireplace repair. Kimberly called up the fireplace fellow, who said the cost would be about the same as four years ago.

Fast forward to today. He went to work on the roof, and also putting a damper in down in the fireplace proper. There was much going in and out of doors and I eventually decided to herd the cats into my office and adjoining sun room, which contains lots of places they like to hang out. I closed the door to keep them away from dangerous open doors or falling bricks.

However, they were not happy. All the banging, and especially the running about on the roof, seriously freaked them out. At one point Munchkin was cowering under my comfy chair while Cobweb hid on my secret bookshelf. At another point Munchkin was hiding behind my computer while Cobweb crouched a couple of feet away, near the fax machine.

They wouldn't even eat their cat treats.

Now, though, the Evil Chimney Man is gone, the running and banging has stopped, and generally the world is a more cat friendly place.

Munchkin seems to have forgotten the trauma entirely, as is usually the case.
