Just before I left for Santa Barbara, I thought I saw Callisto limping, but when I watched her closely, I decided I was imagining things. Because sometimes I worry about the cats more than I should. But then the night before I came home, Kimberly told me she'd seen Callisto limping, quite noticeably. Sigh.

I felt bad for a bit, for not having immediately spotted and taken care of the problem, but Kimberly affirmed that she spent most of each day walking fine, so it became understandable. (That Callisto spent most of the day walking fine, not, unfortunately, Kimberly.)

Today's stressor was thus taking Callisto to the vet, but it wasn't really that stressful. The most stress, in fact, was carrying a 13.1# cat four blocks (and back) in her carrier, which does take effort.

She was friendly as anything at the vet. She came right out of the carrier when I opened the cage. That's Callisto. Then when I later wanted to demonstrate her walking, I called her over to me, then sent her back to the vet, and she responded almost immediately both times. The vet was impressed.

It looks like she sprained her right elbow somehow. (I immediately translated it to shoulder, but the doc said elbow.) That guess is based on the fact that she squawked whenever the doctor squeezed her shoulder, but was fine with everything else. She's a clumsy cat, so she probably fell out of the cat tree or something.

So the doctor gave us three days of NSAIDs to help with the pain and inflammation, and suggested we keep her off the cat tree, which at 6 feet is likely to be her highest (and most frequent) jump.

I couldn't fit the cat tree into either of the two downstairs closets, and I can't easily get it upstairs on our own, so instead Kimberly figured out that we could fill the top two levels with boxes, then cover it all up with a blanket.

We now have bizarre modern art in our living room.

Both cats have investigated, and tried to get into the forbidden levels, but with no luck.

Callisto was the funniest. She saw the draped blanket and was sure she could get under it. So, she climbed up to the top level and tried to stick her paws and head under the blanket, but then found the piled boxes there. She soon realized she couldn't get in, so ignominiously had to climb down the cat tree backward until she could get to the first non-forbidden level.

Hopefully, keeping her off the tree and giving her NSAIDs will solve the problem.

If it's still going on in a week, we should take her back (though it'll probably be a week+, depending on when I'm able after my kidney stone procedure).

Tomorrow's stressor: finding out why my kidney stone procedure isn't in Kaiser's appointment records.
