Weather. It seems that we've settled into a low-key summer weather pattern. The temp has been between the high 60s and low 70s and the overcast has mostly been clearing by mid day. My sort of summer, really, and better than last year's absolute gray bleakness.

(Well, maybe I'd like that gray to be clearing a little earlier, but there you go.)

NIMBY, NIMBY, NIMBY. You just can't throw a rock in the Berkeley/Rockridge area without hitting a NIMBY in their stupid head. They totally wrecked a mass transit corridor planned for Berkeley/Oakland (think of the poor Telegraph shops!), but we managed to keep them from destroying the plan to revitalize downtown in a green way last year. Now they're taking aim at the Safeway that Kimberly and I frequently shop at (which is just over the border in Oakland's swanky Rockridge district).

Safeway wants to revitalize the store (there's that word that NIMBYs hate again, because it doesn't involve old, rotting "historic" buildings) by doubling the size of the Safeway which will include several supplemental businesses. Which sounds like a great idea to me (though we'd surely be inconvenienced in the short term), as I've always found the store just a bit gray and depressing, but what do people like us who actually want to use businesses count?

A group of 22 or so Rockridge busy-bodies hate and fear change and (odds are) will set back the plans by years. They'd much rather see the Safeway close up--and businesses throughout Berkeley and Oakland close (which is just what's happening without revitalization)--if it preserves their precious memories. I was amused by a picture of three of the ringleaders at sfgate* over the weekend, who all seemed to be of retirement age. Yep, NIMBYism thy name is old-fogey.

* The thing that pissed me off about the article most, and is typical of sfgate's shoddy journalism: the article kept repeating the old folks' statement that the parking lot was being removed and conflated it with worries about traffic. Yeah, the parking lot will be gone ... to be replaced by an underground PARKING LOT.

Blackest Night! Finished my read of the Blackest Night Green Lantern books over the weekend too. That was something like 25-30 issues total, and my brain was very tired at the end of it. Fun reading, if not necessarily deep.

Upcoming Anniversaryism. And we're just more than a week out from Kimberly and my's 11th(!!) wedding anniversary. Kimberly suggested a delightful afternoon and evening which will include Harry Potter #8 (in 2D, thank you) and Chevy's. Looking forward to it!
