In Sacramento
Oct. 22nd, 2010 07:31 pmTyping here on my iPad. Not a substitute for a real computer but much better than when I've done typing on my iPhone (and great for web browsing and such because of the relatively hUge screen). Still this post has a good probability of looking like it was typed by an illiterate.
We're up here for a wedding, which is tomorrow. We decided to take the train up a day early and I'm very pleased with the decision which resulted in today being entirely pleasant while tomorrow should be nonstressful.
The train ride was very nice and it just made me shake my head at how horrendous we've allowed the govt and airline companies to make air travel. We got to the station about 20 minutes early, the train showed up right on time and left a minute later. There was plenty of room for my jacket in z bin up top and more than enough leg room. The 2 hours just whooshed away (though as I told k. thats likely because i've gotten used to the very long flights to Hawaii). Compare that to showing up at airports 2 hours early, being prodded and felt up through security, being herded on the planes like cattle and then siitting for hours with the inevitable problems ... Sigh. I guess airplanes have to become obsolete before they stop sucking.
once in Sacramento, we walked around for a couple of hours. I haven't been up here in about 20 years. Saw the Capitol and the park behind it which was largely peopled by the homeless today, though that might be because it was gray and misting. Walked south into some sketchier neighborhoods. Lots of Victorians, a bit boxier than in the bay Area, and in various stages of up or down keep. Toured through a park which had a large pond / small lake which was now fenced in and going to seed.
The highlight or the trip was when we got over to the river (the Sacramento, I'd guess but I wouldnt swear on it) and found a brand new pedestrian and bike bridge leading to an area called the docks which had very recently been renovated to have very nice walkways overlooking the river. We eventually left that area passing the unattractively yellow tower bridge ANd heading into old sacrAmento which had very beat up piers and inward of that sacramento's version of fishermans wharf (by which I mean very touristy and selling tons of tourist kitsch, though unlike sf some of it was themed old west).
beyond that we found a pretty pitiful excuse for a mall. Mainly in that it seemed to be slowly dying. The actual design was pretty nice with some open air areas that you would never see in a bay area mall. But we spent half an hour searching for restaurants and bathrooms that weren't where the directories said they were.
Finally settled on the food court. Surprisingly decent med food despite the unappetizing photos.
Now safely back at hotel room which is relatively spacious and literally a 5 minute walk from the cathedral fomorrow. Maybe 4.
