A Busy Weekend
Jun. 28th, 2010 12:42 amWith some unusual diversions.
Bike Breakage. Riding to EndGame on Saturday my rear gear cable snapped. It was a bit surprising: I've never had that happen before in 25 years of biking on geared bicycles. Also, a bit troublesome, because my rear gear was stuck in the highest sprocket. Fortunately it's downhill all the way to Oakland.
(Insert your own joke here.)
I tried to fiddle with my gears when I got to Oakland and just cut myself on the shredded end of my gear cable. After that, I decided to leave well enough alone.
The trip home was more trying. Fortunately I've figured out if that if I take San Pablo to West Street, that's mostly flat when going home. I decided to stay on the back streets past West, so from there I got onto King (I think) which I used to ride when I worked at Chaosium. It's now a bike boulevard, and has been calmed a bit more. Definitely a nice alternative to riding MLK or Adeline in that area.
Once I got up to the South Berkeley library, I had to start climbing, but managed to make it home, though I was pretty tired.
The bike went in to Missing Link today and was fixed while we did errands, for the very low price of $25 or so. Such a good bike place.
Gaming Loungage. So EndGame was our regular RPGing. A D&D/Savage Tide session as it happens. But, there was a bit of a challenge. This Saturday was also board gaming day, and EndGame hadn't had a board gaming saturday in a while. The result was surprisingly well attended, as in almost every table was occupied when I got there, which is perhaps better than I've ever seen on Saturday at 1pm.
Anthony was fortunately looking out for us, and had already offered us the lounge. I was somewhat concerned about the size, since it's a small area with just 4 comfy chairs, but Anthony rightly pointed out that we could pull in other chairs if needed. We had 5, and that turned out to work quite while.
The pluses: very comfy chairs, very quiet, a more intimate gathering. The minuses: not really enough room for all the dice, character sheets, and such. (I hope we didn't accidentally leave anything behind.) Not as good as a table, but not bad, and I'm certainly appreciative of how the EndGame folks watch out for us.
Sunday Shoppage. So K. and I had tentatively planned to bike down to El Cerrito today, but with my bike in the shop, we BARTed there instead.
The prime goal was to get shoes, since both of ours were breaking down. I found some very nice black shoes with really sturdy sides, which is what my physical therapist recommended last year (and I tried with my last shoes, but they just ended up breaking down faster than my shoes usually do, which I found inexplicable).
We also got a shower curtain at a conveniently located Ace, and that was installed today.
I've been out and about doing various things to minorly improve our living conditions. I have blinds on order, hopefully coming in this coming week. They'll fill a couple of windows that have been blindless and replace the old broken ones in K.'s office. I also ordered some new drapes from Pottery Barn today to replace a dilapidated pair, of which one was destroyed by Lucy, the other by the elements.
Woohoo.
Back to Workage. Tomorrow. But over the next week I'll be doing some very manageable final touches to High Society, maybe some work on the index, and then taking a three-day next weekend. It'll be a nice coda before the next game gets going. (That's Kingdoms.)
