Ch-Ch-Changes
Feb. 26th, 2010 11:38 pmMy Thursday Review Group is going to be changing this year. John is moving to Germany (for a job) in three or four months, then Brody is moving to Denmark (for a job). I'm very sad to lose them both because they've been invariably happy to try new games, good-natured about both victory and loss, and very good players. I've really had to fight to win even a fair share of victories in my current gaming group.
On the other hand, we'll have an old hand returning: Mike A. will be taking one of those slots, and in fact gamed with us this last Thursday, as Chris was out of town. I'm very happy to see him in the group again (which was why he was my first choice to invite). We played Priests of Ra, then my first two games of Race for the Galaxy this year, and much fun was had by all.
I'm still going to need to hunt up one more gamer when Summer comes, but building back up from 4 is much less urgent than building back up from 3 would have been.
In work life, I'm ready to kick off real work on High Society come Monday. I've been saying that for weeks, but I've been juggling too many things to make it a reality for most weeks since I came back from Hawaii. Now that I've finished off a week of solid work on the Gaming Index and just about finished some code to give our iPhone Apps an online catalog, I should be able to do what I want.
I'm hoping to mostly prototype High Society in March, then polish it up in April for a May Day release, but we'll see how much my card-tabletop classes really speed up development ...
I usually bring way too many books to read on vacation, with the exception being my 2001 vacation to Hawaii, where K. and I really did hang out and read for hours every day. In any case, the result is that I'm still finishing up books that I took with me to Hawaii (and back).
Deadhouse Gates, the second Malazan Book of the Fallen has been my most ever-present companion. I read about the first 250 pages on the flight to Hawaii and while there. I fell asleep many any afternoon with it resting on my chest. I'm now at about page 750, and one of the major plot-threads has been brought to a climax. Whew.
In a bit I think I'm going to pick up Kalin, an E.C.Tubb book that I brought to Hawaii and never got to. There are a few RPG books that I still haven't touched from that trip, but they were much more speculative (and hopeful) than the fiction reading.
It's a bit sad to see the fiction pass by, as I can still enjoy the connection to those warm, beautiful islands while I read it.
(Very cold today. Ready for winter to be over, here in Not-Hawaii.)
Role-playing tomorrow, with a return to Traveller, many, many weeks after we played last. I'm hopeful for a fun game with A, B, and C plots that could interweave in interesting ways if I and the players are alert enough. And I'm hoping to edge into a new chapter in the game, following the trip to Mora that resulted from the initial plot. We shall see.
