California Academy of Science
May. 10th, 2009 09:53 pmSpent Mom's Day with my Mom today. She likes museums and such, so she asked to go to the California Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park for the day. The whole clan went--Bob, mom, me, Kimberly, Jason, and Rob (though not Jason's fiancee, who was working).
We had a nice picnic lunch out in the Rose Garden at GG Park. It was Togo's sandwiches, plus various accouterments. We haven't had a Togo's in central Berkeley since the last one went out of business many years ago due to serious mismanagement, so that was a nice little treat.
After that, it was into the Academy. I haven't been there in many years, since long before it was remodeled recently, so I just scarcely remembered it. We covered pretty much the entire building.
My favorite exhibits of the day were:
1) The Philippines Island fish exhibit. It was full of tropical fish, many of which I've seen in Hawaii and many which I hadn't. I also love to be reminded of the islands.
2.) The penguin exhibit. South African penguins, apparently. They were cute waddling around, but we also were lucky enough to get there just as they were being fed, so we got to see them get all active and then start gulping down fish. Very cool.
3.) The rainforest exhibit, which is in a big bio-dome. Besides much vegetation, it was also full of butterflies and birds. (Some of the birds seemed to be eating the butterflies(!), suggesting they have to replenish that part of the exhibit frequently).
Overall a nice day, and a good chance to hang out with family.
Of course there were children EVERYWHERE in a very crowded museum, so I hope I don't come down with the swine flu as a result.
