Today Kimberly and I rode part of the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail. I'd actually ridden a small section of it through Lafayette a few months ago, but this time the goal was to head straight southward into Moraga along the main part of the trail.

The trail unfortunately doesn't have a great connection to Lafayette BART. You have to go along Mt. Diablo Road for a bit, which is overly busy through downtown Lafayette. We tried a different route coming back--but it involved bumping along a pumice-covered trail, then going up a steep, almost as busy road--we ended up turning around and going back to Mt. Diablo.

The actual trail itself is another rails-to-trails route, much like the Iron Horse Trail. It's a greenway that's about 60 feet wide overall, cutting through quiet, semi-rural neighborhoods, with trees overlooking everything. It's quite attractive. The trail is also very well used, by bikers, dog-walkers, and joggers alike.

(Kimberly was particularly impressed by an elderly man out on the trail in his walker.)

Once you've gone through Lafayette for a while, you start getting into more hilly areas. The trails starts to climb and begins to wind through more and more beautiful hills.

Unfortunately, the hills got to be too much for Kimberly, so we turned back about 2.5 miles from the trail end. We'll head back there some other time.

(I've also learned that you can take a loop, riding on-street routes from Orinda BART to the end of the Lafayette-Moraga Trail, then taking the trail back up to the Lafayette BART, which sounds like a wonderful expedition to do some day.)

Overall, a very nice day of biking, especially since I finally got Kimberly to join me on one of these longer adventures. Total time on the trail was about 2 hours (including trips back and forth to BART on either side) and total mileage was 17 miles.

(I haven't been writing about biking as much lately because the dark, rain, and cold of winter, plus various commitments, have been keeping me indoors. I've logged about 60 miles biking since the Thanksgiving holidays, that's mostly going to Endgame and back. I'm looking forward to when the weather warms up in a couple of months.)
