Well, we did indeed do a gamer dinner tonight. Almost everyone made it: me, Dave W., Kevin, Chris W., Chris V., Dave S. Mary, Donald, and of course Eric and Barb. Kimberly joined us too. I'd been not sure if I was going to attend, but I was feeling pretty good today, having recovered from the debauchery of Saturday. And, how could I not go when it was just down the street from me at Fondue Fred's?

Fondue Fred's has been there, as Eric said, since the last time fondue was in style (in the '70s). We used to eat there sometimes after gaming at my old apartment, the one up on Hillegass that I haven't lived in for almost a decade. So, it really felt like old times, except with a few more women at the table and a bit more gray in all our hair.

And it also really felt like a last time, though I suspect I said the same thing when Eric moved away in 2005*. But Eric feels really adamant about not coming back to the US. It's not just about who's President anymore, but rather that he feels our society really encourages unkind behavior.

Maybe. But I just can't get too upset about that sort of moral issue very often when I'm reasonably happy with how life goes on a day to day basis. If I ever did a big move, it'd probably be as much novelty as anything else.

It's funny. I went back and I read that post that I wrote three and a half years ago, and I saw that we talked about lots of memories of the past at that particular final dinner. We did that a little tonight, but it wasn't the main focus. Instead it was just about connecting with friends, about discussing the state of the US, New Zealand and the world, about laughing and enjoying the company, which I did.

When Eric left back in 2005, I was certain our RPG group was going to collapse, because he'd been the core of it for so long. But we've continued on. I've been having great fun running my last couple of campaigns, and Kevin and Donald have also picked up the slack. So, we've continued on, and it's the tool that lets our friendship continue on too.

* Ah, the beauty of LJ Archives. The answer is yep. From March, 2005: "We stayed at Fondue Fred's for about four hours, till we decided that the staff was wanting to go home. Someone, I think Chris V., said that there should be a voice over, 'This was the last time we would all be together ...' It probably will be."
