Elf at Last, Elf at Last
Nov. 7th, 2007 04:48 pmMongoose says that the Elf Book that I wrote them for their RuneQuest is shipping:

This was simultaneously both the easiest and the hardest roleplaying book I've written--and notably the first long work that I've done for the RPG field in almost ten years, since before I was married (or at least the first that's been published).
It was the hardest book I'd ever written because I started in on it when I was working at Chaosium in the 1990s and began to put together a lot of ideas for elfin mythology, history, and psychology that Greg Stafford liked. He encouraged me to write a book, but at the time Gloranthan roleplaying was so much in transition that there was no good way to write it, so I wrote bits and pieces for Gloranthan magazines and mostly played around for a decade without actually setting virtual pen to paper.
I then finally got my butt into gear and wrote a 100,000 word book for HeroQuest, finishing up last year.
It was the easiest book I'd ever written because the RuneQuest book was actually the second in line, after the HQ book. When I saw Mongoose was putting out racial books, I begged them to let me write about the elfs. I was actually quite worried that they'd come out with something on their own and contradict my 10 years of thought and 100,000 words of writing. They agreed and I was then able to woosh through the RQ elf book faster than anything I've ever written.
It's 60,000 words, and is totally original text from the HQ book. I further did what I could to make them each original and different, for example highlighting some elements of society in the RQ book which were more briefly discussed in the HQ book, and focusing on different forests.
If you have a collection of Tradetalk magazine you can see some of my earlier writings on elfs, as well as some more recent stuff related to the HQ book:

If you go to Mongoose's free online magazine, Signs & Portents, you can find some articles related to the RQ book:

And watch your store for the actual Elfs book, either mid next week or the week after.
