Elfs Really Done Now
Apr. 29th, 2007 05:03 pmI just sent off the text for my RuneQuest elf book to Mongoose. That means, absent any editing, I'm really done with the Aldryami, at least for now. Over the last eight months I've completed two books, a 100,000 word HeroQuest elf book and a 60,000 word RuneQuest elf book. I have to say, I'm somewhat happy to put them aside for now.
The RuneQuest book should see print first. Mongoose either has already solicited it or is in the process of doing so. I'm guessing that means it'll be out somewhere between August and October depending on how far ahead they do their solicitations.
This is the shorter book by a considerable margin, and thus I didn't get to go into as much depth of detail. However as the second written of the books I think it benefited from my having gained an even greater understanding of the Aldryami from having written one book about them. Everything seemed to "click" that much better.
I also did my best to make it a unique book by concentrating on the Second Age setting. There's some very specific info on three forests--Arstola, the Stinking Forest, and to a lesser extent Errinoru--that makes them quite usable as Second Age adventure locales and provides much more detail than my other book did. The myths and gods of the elfs are also looked at from a much more anthropomorphic viewpoint, as is appropriate in the age of the God Learners.
The HeroQuest book is third or fourth down in Moon Design's production list, and thus it's going to probably be longer before it sees print. I'd love it to come out this year, but my guess is 2008; we'll see.
It's a bigger book and so it provides a much more in-depth look at the Aldryami book. In particular it hits every elf forest in Glorantha, though these are wider overviews that the in-depth descriptions I wrote from RQ. Only Tarinwood gets really thorough examination through a 5000-word geographical overview.
The HQ book also focuses a bit less on crunch and a bit more on background, as is appropriate for the game system (though honestly, neither book is that crunchy).
There's a bit of a preview for the HQ book in Tradetalk #15, by the by, which I just heard is at the printers. It has a section on the elfs of the Maidstone Mountains, which is written in the same format as all the forest overviews I wrote for the Moon Design book (though it's shorter than almost all of them).
