Snorkeling & Other Diversions
Dec. 24th, 2005 02:49 pmThis morning I got up at the crack of dawn again (that'd be between 6am and 7am) and by 9am, Kim, my dad, and I were up at Snorkel Bob's getting snorkeling equipment. Kim & I were down at Lawai Beach, just a half-mile or so southeast of the condo by 10.15am, and so we did our first real snorkeling of the trip. (The folks wanted to head out and see a pearl store that Melody was interested in, then had decided to go swimming at Salt Pond Beach.)
Kim, unfortunately, was a bit panicky about the whole endeavor. I thought she was going to run when she got knocked down a few times getting into the water, but she gamely pushed on and we eventually made it out into the water. For some reason she kept swimming us further out to sea that first time out (apparently she doesn't orient very well in the water), but I eventually got her turned back to safer areas.
I was keeping an eye on Kim much of the time, but did get to see some fish too (and much clearer now with my corrective mask!). I clearly recognized a couple of butterfly fish and a picasso triggerfish. There's quite a few fish at Lawai Beach once you get past the surf at the beach.
We tried a second outing after being on the beach for 5 minutes, but Kim really wasn't up for it, so we shortly headed home. We'll go out to Poipu Beach tomorrow afternoon. It used to be a lot calmer, but the sandbar which protected one side of the beach is now gone. It still didn't look too bad when I went by on Thursday, but we'll see.
We've also been hanging out with the family on and off, and that's been really terrific. Mary's been cooking some simple yet delicious dinners. We had spaghetti with salmon on Thursday and a chicken dish on tortillas Friday. There's been vegetables to go with each time, and it's all been really good. Healthy, home-cooked meals and the good company of family--what more can you ask for?
(More game playing, perhaps. Kim and I have played one game of Lost Cities while we've been here.)
We're taking it easy this afternoon, which should suit Kim well as she's been a bit run down on this trip, much as she was when we went to Seattle a couple of years ago. Tonight we're going taking some family pictures and going out to a nice dinner at a Steak & Seafood place at the Sheraton, then we'll come back to our place and open presents.
Should be another nice day.
