The work on the apartment building across from us is now entering its fourth month.

At first they lightened all the wood siding (though water power). Then they darkened all the wood siding (through some finish). Then they started putting new windows in all the apartments. I'm sure they've done some other things that I haven't seen in the meantime.

At first I puzzled over the activity on the apartments, and then it became obvious to me: the owner wants to sell. It's a sad state of affairs in our society where the only reason that work would be done to improve the beauty & quality of an apartment building is to sell it off, but I suspect my reasoning is the correct one.

Though, to be honest, this seems a bit like overkill. Dave P. did some work on his house before he sold. A little paint in the basement, some refinished ceilings, that sort of thing. Relatively inexpensive, and the realtor told him that it would increase the value of the house by more. I'm just unconvinced that 3+ months worth of work is going to fit into the same category, though that's been 3+ months worth of work by just 2 or 3 people at any time.

We should have asked the apartment owners to redo our front yard, since I'd bet that increases the value of their property too.

We're seeing the last throes of Summer here in Berkeley. And I'd suspect that's a correct use of the phrase, unlike that of our esteemed, but poorly spoken, Vice President. We had some actual hot days last week, up to 80+. It's cooler today, but we're promise a few more 75-80 this week. By the time that Halloween rolls around, Berkeley has usually gotten chill and cloudy, so the cats had better enjoy the warm sunlight while they can.

vBulletin 3.5 just came out, so I'm promptly upgrading the RPGnet boards, in the hope that the database access might be just a bit more rational in this version of the software than the last. That's always my hope, and really never seems to work out.

I'm partway through the upgrade script, and it's now gotten to a point where it wants to revise the "posts" database table. Which has millions of entries in it. 827 seconds and counting on that change. I'm hoping that the script doesn't time out, as it has for me on past upgrades ...
