Memorial Day
Jun. 1st, 2004 11:11 amI'm usually not a big fan of holidays, but yesterday I did various thinks to commemorate the day.
Memorial Day
I worked during the day, which is typical for me on holidays. We don't have many holidays at Skotos because the 24x7 nature of the games tend to make it a bad idea for people to take off all at the same time, especially on the days where people are more likely to be playing. So, I was around yesterday, and keeping a vague eye on customer-support email and catching up on email requests in my own account too.
However, also typical for me on holidays--or at least holidays that I care the least bit about--I give myself something fun to do. I did some various programming work on the RPGnet reviews section. The biggest thing I did was set up printable versions of our reviews, which
christophera_ had requested last week. I also did a few other minor tweaks and fixed a couple of minor bugs I'd become aware of.
I always enjoy this type of work, because it's a visible progress type of thing.
Memorial Evening
For the evening I'd decided to celebrate Memorial Day with a traditional cookout (or, as we'll see in a moment, a non-traditional cookout). You see, the gamers got
kimberly_a and me a grill for our wedding, about four years ago now. Various grills were held on it, probably three or four a summer, until the gamers stopped gaming here last year at K's request. As it happens, DP or DS was always happy to be the overlord of the grill, and as a result I'd never used it.
So last night, I set out on a valiant quest. First I cleared the empty boxes out of our rear entryway, so that I could get to the door. Then I cleared away the weeds that were surrounding the barbecue. Then, I girded my loins and prepared for my first BBQ experience.
It went utterly fine, as I'd aptly learned grilling through osmosis when the gamers were here. I grilled up some portobello mushrooms, some corn on the cob, and some tofu beer brauts. As I explained to K., overeating is a memorial day tradition. The beer brauts were OK, while the portobellos and corn was excellent. A most enjoyable evening of grilled food.
While eating we watched the third episde of Band of Brothers, which brought us through the month following D-Day, and then we played the Sword Beach scenario for Memoir '44, which brought us back to one of the D-Day invasions.
I'm sure we memorialized more than 80-90% of the nation, all said and done (with the remaining 10-20% mostly being people who knew someone who died on one of our many, many, mostly unjustified wars).
Later in the evening I finished up my review of Memoir '44, which'll be going out on RPGnet on Wednesday, but that was pretty much the end of our memorial celebrations.
Memorial Night
Last night I was woken in the middle of the night by crashing sounds downstairs. K. slept fitfully, rather than telling me that she thought there were killers downstairs, and thus I went to investigate. A bad cat came streaking out of the kitchen as I walked in. I didn't see anything else about, though this morning it became obvious she was knocking stuff into the sink.
As I said, bad cat! A bit tired this morning as a result of the nocturnal investigations.
