RPGnet Update: Complete
Dec. 29th, 2003 05:38 pmI just finished up a massive, long awaited, and much feared move of RPGnet.
All told, I moved somewhere around 5 Gigs of information. Other than some fighting with permissions and some fighting with mysql (in both cases partially because I did some cleanup as I scooted things over, but actually mysql was pretty honery all on its own), it went pretty well, though it was time-consuming and emotionally exhausting (because you're trying to minimize downtime in this sort of situation).
The old RPGnet machine was troublesome in a number of ways. It had gotten very unstable and wasn't entirely maintainable because it was a unique configuration. In addition we had a couple of situations where colo staff weren't as available as we would have liked, combined with the fact that the colo is almost an hour away from Berkeley. Finally, the colo prices weren't competitive. This all hit a crisis point over the Christmas holidays, when the machine's expected uptime decreased to about two days. Thus, as soon as I was working again today, I went straight in to the machine move.
Later in the week I'm going to do a massive cleanup on RPGnet, getting rid of old, crufty, unused files in an attempt to make the whole site more expandable. I'd hoped to do this prior to the move, but, alas, it wasn't possible.
Glad that's done.
