Weird Dreams: The Art Gallery
Apr. 17th, 2003 11:01 amLast night I dreamt that I owned an art gallery. Contained within it were 32 painting done by my late aunt, who was apparently pretty famous. Every night we allowed people into the gallery as part of a contest to sit around and copy my aunt's 32 pieces of art.
By copy I don't mean these people were professional forgers or anything. Instead they sat around with colored pencils and produced their own visions of these paintings in a very different medium. Most nights no one finished up their drawings, and so we didn't have to give out any prize. But every once in a while everyone would finish up (how they managed that with such synchronicity, I don't know), and so we'd browse through them all, select our favorite, and give that winner a piece of art (not one of my aunt's 32 paintings).
In any case we got to keep all the attempts.
In my dreaming I was browsing through everyone's artwork trying to pick a winner, and I kept thinking that I could draw just this well, and understood my aunt's paintings better, and thus should enter the contest myself someday. But then I came to one woman who had somehow managed to do an oil painting while everyone else was drawing. It ws clearly better than all the drawings, but I also thought it was better than my aunt's original, because it used brighter colors. (And I also thought here, that though I could draw I couldn't paint, and so I shouldn't enter the contest after all.)
I awarded the prize to this woman with the oil painting, but instead of giving her some lesser known work, I instead gave her my aunt's original which she'd been copying.
As the gallery started to clear out, I realized that Dumb Cat(tm) was around. She was apparently the gallery cat, but was acting very unlike herself because she wasn't yowling or demanding attention. Someone I decided this meant that she wasn't happy at the gallery, and so I began making preparations to take her back home ...
