Well, I must sadly say that the refinishing of the coffee table last Friday was only of limited success.

The stuff I put on the table was some sort of protective goop that we'd gotten several years ago. You see, Kimberly and her family and friends had carved various names and pictures into the table over the years and so we wanted to keep it from falling apart but not cover up that stuff.

I wasn't entirely sure how it would look, since a lot of the finish had worn off the table, but come Saturday morning I was pretty pleased by the result. The lightest parts of the table looked a little darker under the finish and the carvings were quite clear.

Unfortunately, a few days later, the finish hasn't really set. In fact it seems to come up if you apply any water, say the condensation from a glass, and since we often eat at that coffee table, this is notably subpar.

I'm hoping it'll finish setting in a couple of days, but if not I'll have to figure out what to do next. I guess a sealant over the finish might do the job, or a different finish that isn't 5 years old. I might need to try and get this current finish off too (which, fortunately means I just have to apply water as far as I can see). Really, though, we'll need to figure out how much effort we want to put into this ancient coffee table.

Somewhat more successfully I rearranged the games in the Dining Room tonight. I've got some games on shelves in the room itself, and more in the closet, and they were all starting to get disorganized and were generally overflowing as well.

I moved a lot of unused games upstairs: untouched party games into the guest room and unused American games as well as my small stock of "trade" games into the sun room.

Then I swapped things around. One of the main ideas was to make sure that anything in the closet was a clear set so that it would be easy to remember which games were there. (If I put singletons in I was afraid I'd lose track of them.) So the closet now has: all my large Alea bookshelf games; all my Hans im Gluck bookshelf games; my stack of Kramer & Kiesling games; my large Moon & Schacht games; all of my Days of Wonder and Out of the Box games; and all my card games. I suppose it's still not quite as organized as I'd like, but it's a lot better; the biggest problem continues to be that designers have games in so many different sized boxes.

While I was moving things around I decided to go ahead and organize all of my Knizia games together too (except his OTB games, actually). I was struck by how many of them are in very small boxes. Samurai, The Motley Fool, Amun-Re, and Tigris & Euphrates are all in pretty big boxes, but I had over twice that number, from Res Publica to Razzia that are all small. I supect that in general Knizia just isn't a big game guy, even if those are the ones we tend to remember.

Anyway, things are better organized now, and there's room for growth, which is good given the twenty or so games on my to-play or to-review piles.

Kimberly seems to be doing better tonight; this is good.
