Our vacation in Kauai is over for another year. K. thought we were busier and more active this year than in previous years, but it felt pretty typical to me (though it was occasionally busy, like on Wednesday and Saturday when we did long car tours):

    • Pohaku T's (Koloa)
    • Lappert's (Poipu, ice cream)
    • Swimming (Poipu Beach)

      • Japanese Cemetery (Hanapepe)
      • Thrift Stores (Hanapepe x2)
      • Waimea Back Road & Swinging Bridge (Waimea)
      • JoJo's (Waimea)
      • Glass Beach (Port Allen)

    • South Pacific (Kapaa)

  • Thursday:

    • Biking (Kapaa, in rain)
    • Monico's (Kapaa, mexican food, out of rain)

  • Friday:

    • Glass Beach (still Port Allen)
    • Nearby Cemetery (Port Allen, threatening rain)
    • Swimming (Salt Pond Beach, in rain)
    • Hanapepe Art Walk (Hanapepe, in rain)

  • Saturday:

    • St. Regis (Princeville, fancy brunch, out of rain)
    • Tour Around North Shore (in rain)

      • Impressive Waves at Hanalei! (Hanalei)

    • Unanticipated Hike back to Poipu (Poipu)

  • Sunday:

    • McDonald's (Eleele, pre-church breakfast)
    • Church (Eleele, threatening rain)
    • Swimming (Salt Pond Beach)
    • Keoki's (Poipu, fancy dinner)
    • Lappert's (Poipu, ice cream)

  • Monday:

    • Departure (Lihue)

As noted, there was much rain, though it was often regional. The day it poured in North Shore, it was bright and sunny in Poipu; and similarly though it was wet when we woke up on Sunday, it was nice out at West Shore.

There was also much napping interspersed.

I managed rather surprisingly to hardly work on the trip. I wrote first drafts of five histories for DnDClassics.com on the plane to Kauai, which will take me through the end of March, and on way home I read over half of a book related to some upcoming Skotos work, but that was pretty much it.

Instead I read for pleasure, napped, swam, and chatted with my dad and Mary and Kimberly throughout the week. And traveled around the island. It was extremely relaxing and at least as of this evening, I still feel very relaxed. We'll see how long it lasts (never long).

The trip back was a bit frustrating because Honolulu was just a train wreck. Much of the problem was that they had our mainland plane leaving out of the interisland terminal, which is always a recipe for disaster. That means they have to run everyone individually through an agriculture check, and then they don't have space to do boarding right. They rather ridiculously told us all to self-sort ourselves by seating row in a line. Right.

As has been my experience previously, this all made the boarding process run late. We were almost 30 minutes behind in departing, which thankfully was evened out by the good tailwinds. We still got in 10 or 15 minutes late because we did some kind of weird loop around the whole Bay when we got back home.

There was also an overentitled ass sitting behind us. As he intruded himself into Kimberly and my's conversation, telling us how to think, I thought, "This creep is from somewhere rich in the Bay Area." Turned out he was from Alameda. He also talked to (at) his seatmate the entire flight, but fortunately that turned into a inaudible drone after about 15 minutes.

One other bit of amusement on the plane: a girl sitting behind us expressed how shocked she was that not everyone in Japan spoke English. Who knew!?

Anyway: good vacation.
