I love Ra and, although I don't get to play it IRL much anymore, I have played fairly often on Brettspielveldt (or however it is spelled). I really like the challenge of trying to balance the various collecting elements, each with their own quirks. You know you can't possibly lead in all of the elements, but you still have to watch the other players and decide even when to bother with an element, go "half-in" to guard against a penalty, etc.
I also find the bidding and the awarding of the bidding suns really interesting, right down to the final round where you can pick up extra points for the total of the suns with which you end the game.
Really nice design and I don't see how anyone could find it boring (although I agree on your comment of having to play a few games to really understand the strategy....but what would a good game be if you had the strategy mastered the first time).
