I think you're reading it right.

Ultimately, it comes down to a question of what you're allowed to do with the choices that you're presented, and if you still have sufficient options, you're fine.

LC does notably constrain your choices based on your card draws. But, on the other hand, it still leaves you with the option of what to play when, and that makes considerable difference in the game, so while the game "plays you" you still get to "play back" a considerable amount.
