Book Meme

1) Total number of books owned?

About 11 large bookshelves and 2 small bookshelves of traditional books. Another two large shelves of trade paperback. Another three shelves of roleplaying games, plus a number of tupperware containers. In other words, thousands.

2)Last book I bought?

Last trade paperback was Avengers Assemble! collecting the first year of Kurt Busiek's Avengers series.

The last actual book is a bit trickier because I've been largely living on loaned books, rereads, and stuff from my to-be-read shelves for a number of years. I've probably picked up some random used books from Moe's in the last several months, whenever I last had trade credit, but the last book I really remember buying is The Dark Tower, book 7 of the Dark Tower series, by Stephen King.

3) Last book I read?

The Citadel of the Autarch by Gene Wolfe (or, if you prefer, the entirity of The Book of the New Sun).

4) 5 Books that mean a lot to me?

  • The Book of the New Sun, by Gene Wolfe - One of the deepest and richest books I've read.
  • Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies - Another book that amazed me with its depth, but also one that I read aloud with Kimberly.
  • Ghostwritten, by David Mitchell - A gift from Kimberly and a superbly written set of interwoven plots.
  • Legends of the Pendragon - A collection of Arthurian stories that has my one published work of fiction in it (before things got bad).
  • The Dunwich Horror and Others, by H.P. Lovecraft - One of most beaten up hardcovers, with a dust jacket that's about falling apart, memory of a number of years obsession with the Cthulhu Mythos and my time at Chaosium.

5) Tag 5 people and have them fill this out in their LJ.

I'm going to pass on this requirement, but if you'd like, definitely fill these questions out.

You know, I didn't really like The Book of the New Sun. I appreciated it on an intellecutal level, but I distrusted the narrator so much that I just couldn't enjoy the book.
